Filtering Out Differences

There are three different types of pool filters

Cartridge Pool Filter

Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Pool Filter

Sand Pool Filter

Cartridge Filter

These filters are becoming increasingly popular. Well maintained cartridges will last 3-5 years without needing to be replaced. These filters save water because they are not backwashed; they do not require a backwash valve which can save money on repairs in the future. A filter that undergoes the stress of a lot of algae, tree debris and other contaminants may last only 1 - 2 years.

  • Traps particles 25-100 microns in size
  • Filter cleaning is done to remove dirt when the pressure gauge rises 8-10 lbs. above its clean reading
  • Older filters may require 1-2 cleanings/month
  • Newer filters may require 1-2 cleanings/year

Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Filter

These filters arguably  have the best filtration out of all filter types. D.E. filters perform in a more efficient way than sand and cartridge filters; filtering down  to 3 microns. This means that your water will be so clear that you may require fewer chemicals or be able to run your pump less. D.E. pool filters are more expensive and have a bit more maintenance than other filter types, but for those that appreciate a DE filter's fast clean-up and crystal clear pool water, it's well worth the cost!

  • Traps particles down to 3-5 microns
  • Filter cleaning is done to remove dirt when the pressure gauge rises 8-10 lbs. above its clean reading
  • Monthy backwashing (as needed)
    • Semi-annual maintenance cleaning
  • DE powder- filtration media for diatomaceous earth pool filters
    • added to skimmer
    • diatoms work like tiny sponges for dirt, oil and contaminants

Sand Filter

Sand filters can be the simplest filter types to use. There’s no need to inspect the inside of a sand filter for cleaning, and backwashing is easy and at times hands-free. A sand filter is the perfect choice for a pool owner who wants value, simplicity, and durability.

  • Traps particles 20 - 100 microns
  • Low maintenance
  • Filter cleaning is done to remove dirt when the pressure gauge rises 8-10 lbs. above its clean reading
  • Sand filter should be replaced after seven years (depending on performance)
  • Annual cleaning of the filter sand with sand filter cleaner may prevent it from "gumming-up"

Filter Size Matters

Filters that are too small for your pools needs will wear out quicker and work less efficiently.
Filters that are the appropriate size or bigger will last longer and work more efficiently as a larger filter can be a better option for some pool owners.

  • Jandy
  • Pentair
  • Hayward

What This Means

It's more fun to enjoy the water than to think about what makes it clean and clear. Choosing the best filter for your needs from the beginning will save your wallet and time on routine maintenance.
